Picking a car seat is a big decision and you can’t take baby home from the hospital without one (car seats checks are the last step in your hospital discharge). This is also one of, if not the most expensive item on your must-have list. Needless to say, it’s a choice that comes with some pressure.
As an #ADHDmom, I frequently do things out of order. For example, buying a car seat and stroller travel system before completing the infant car seat safety course we enrolled in. Did I do my own research first? Of course. Was it the right research? Absolutely not. So, here’s what I learned…
To jump-start your search:
- Determine if an infant car seat or a convertible car seat suits your needs, lifestyle and budget best (learn more about car seat types here).
- Baby’s height, weight and age all factor into the type of car seat needed.
- Review your state’s child passenger safety laws to ensure compliance.
- Identify the seat’s maximum height and weight limits before buying.
- Don’t forget to check car seat and stroller compatibility!
Regarding safety:
- Infants should be in a rear-facing car seat as long as possible.
- During installation you’ll need your car manual and car seat instructions.
- Have your car seat inspected post-installation (find a nearby location here).
- Car seat safety courses are available online (e.g., CPS Board: Car Seat Basics, Safe in The Seat: The Infant Course) and through some birthing hospitals.
- The harness chest clip should be positioned at baby’s armpit level.
- Bulky clothing/outerwear interfere with harness safety; straps should be SNUG and in a straight line.

Hot tip: be sure to take your car seat manual with you when it’s time to head to the hospital!
